Tyrannosaurs Moved in Packs

After assessing three sets of tyrannosaur tracks in northeastern B.C, researchers have concluded that tyrannosaurs moved in groups. The tracks are considered to be quite rare.

Researchers said that it has happened for the first time that more than one tyrannosaur track has been found in one place. Lead author of the new study, Richard McCrea, said that the discovery of the three tracks excited them to study how tyrannosaurs walked.

In the fall of 2011, the fossil tracks were discovered by Aaron Fredlund, a hunting guide in Tumbler Ridge, B.C. At that time, he was guiding a group of moose hunters. Fredlund said he is also quite interested in looking out for animal tracks.

He was sweetly surprised when he discovered dinosaur track. The print was quite gigantic as it was made by a three-toed foot and was more than 60 cm long. Fredlund found the track by chance. McCrea thinks that others might have not noticed the tracks.

"If they had noticed them, they probably talked themselves out of identifying them as dinosaur tracks", said McCrea. After having a word with his wife, Fredlund shared the photos of the track with the Tumbler Ridge Museum. The museum then passed on those images to McCrea, who was studying fossil tracks in Australia at that time.

After returning to Canada, he and his team visited the place and further researches led them to find additional tracks. The three tyrannosaurs were having different sizes. Another interesting finding was that tyrannosaurs moved in packs.
