South Carolina Coast Likely to Witness Extreme Floods within four decades

On Monday, an analysis has been released that reveals about the threat being faced by South Carolina due to sea level rise. The survey was conducted by Climate Central of Princeton, New Jersey. It is a non-profit group of scientists and journalists that surveys climate change studies.

The analysis found that the South Carolina coast is at risk to face extreme floods of over four feet high tide and that too within 40 years in a danger zone. The danger zone includes 54,000 homes. North Carolina has $9 billion in property.

Ben Strauss, lead author of the report, was of the view that two years back they have used maps from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Using the maps, they have assessed the population and housing that face risk because of flooding in all coastal states.

But now they have new maps, which are better as they have high quality. Also, they comprise of 100 additional features including property value, school, religious places, infrastructure and power plants that can be flooded.

Frank Knapp, CEO of the South Carolina Small Business Chamber of Commerce, said the report findings clearly indicate that coastal communities should come up with strategies to make their communities more resilient when it comes to different sea level rise.

As per the report findings, sea level rise is expected to rise 12 inches by 2050. When it comes to North Carolina, 11 inches rise is expected by 2050.
