On July 3, 2014, Zack 'Danger' Brown of Columbus, Ohio, kicked off an unusual Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign for 'potato salad.'
The campaign was launched for raising a rather modest funding target of $10; and, within a week, the project has raised an amount of $69,000 from over 5,000 backers --- with 23 days still left for the campaign to come to an end!
With the viral Kickstarter potato salad campaign going somewhat out of hand, 31-year-old Brown - who apparently launched the campaign as a joke - now owes potato salad to around 5,000 people and counting.
Nonetheless, to attract backers to his campaign, Brown - the co-owner of a software company - is presently offering nine different awards; which range from a 'Thank you' on his website for backers who pledge $1 to a potato salad cookbook for backers who donate $50.
Almost all the awards being offered by Brown include a bite of the potato salad which he plans to make with the funds; thereby ensuring the compliance of his campaign with the Kickstarter stipulation that "projects must create something to share with others."
Towards that end, Kickstarter has already asserted in a statement: "Kickstarter's a global community of millions of people who fund projects of all shapes and sizes. There's no single recipe for inspiration."
