Oregon residents prepare themselves for release of names of 10 people killed in a shooting at Umpqua Community College

Residents of a rural town prepared themselves on Friday for the announcement of the names of the 10 people who have died in a shooting at Umpqua Community College in southern Oregon. As a result of the shooting, President Obama, on Thursday, renewed his calls for more gun regulation.

According to authorities, the male shooter, whose name has not been released in an attempt to avoid giving him further notoriety, was killed in a shootout with police on Thursday, around 10:30 am on Thursday.

A motive has not been released so far. Authorities said that the state medical examiner's office will release the identity of the victims as early as Friday.

While leaving a candlelight vigil for the victims late Thursday, Gail Kuntz said that she doesn't want to know the names yet as she is not ready for it. She added that the names are going to hurt this community all over again.

Seven others got injured in the shooting, when the gunman started firing in a classroom at the southern Oregon College. Since August, it was the fourth shooting on a US college campus.

During an evening press conference, Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin said, "Let me be very clear: I will not name the shooter. Focus your attention on the victims and their families and helping them recover".

However, federal law enforcement sources have identified the gunman as Chris Mercer, who was a resident of the area. As per the sources, he had four firearms, including a rifle. The investigations are going on to know whether Mercer purposely targeted victims or was it a random firing.
