Archaeologists find one of the Amazing Scientific Objects of Antiquity

One of the most amazing scientific objects of antiquity was found by archaeologists when they set out to use a revolutionary new deep sea diving suit to explore the ancient shipwreck.

The Antikythera Mechanism is a 2nd-century BC device, identified as the world's oldest computer and designed to predict astronomical positions and eclipses. It was discovered by sponge divers in 1900 off a remote Greek island in the Aegean.

To track the cycles of the solar system, the ancient Greeks make use of the extremely complex mechanism of up to 40 bronze cogs and gears.

Now, archaeologists are coming back to the wreck and will be able to use a new diving suit. A new driving suit will allow them to more than double the depth they can dive at, and stay carefully at the bottom for longer.

Archaeologist Theotokis Theodoulou says that the Exosuit, made in Canada by Nuytco Research, will allow divers to reach depths of 150m and still carry out delicate tasks.

Odoulou also said that the suit which looks like a puffy space suit will expand its capabilities, as the team set off for a month-long expedition to Antikythera, which is situated between Crete and the Peloponnese.

Up till now, archaeologists had only been able to work at a depth of 60 meters and they consider that various other facts are yet to be found in and around the wreck.

The mechanism was discovered with a spectacular bronze statue of a youth in the wreck of a cargo ship evidently carrying booty to Rome. Researchers are sure that still there are other items on board left to be found.

"There are dozens of items left, this was a ship bearing immense riches from Asia Minor," said Dimitris Kourkoumelis, archaeologist on the team.

The archaeologists also look forward to prove the presence of a second ship that is about 250 meters away from the original discovery site.
