It has been found that suicide rates of men are among the most crucial health issue faced by the Irish society presently. Therefore, Simon Bracken has taken a step forward to guide and inform people through a documentary on how men can improve their mental health.

Simon Bracken, a Masters student in Journalism at CIT, has filmed a touching but informative documentary named, 'Men's Mental Health - It's Okay To Talk About It'. Simon edited and self-released the documentary. The documentary was released during the National Suicide prevention Week and World Suicide prevention Day.

In the video, Simon showed how mental health of the participants at the Men's Shed in Carrigaline was improving through various projects and activities. He also had a word with various experts, some of whom were Professor Ella

Arensaman, Research Director at the National Suicide Research Foundation (NSRF) and Michelle Duffy from Cork Samaritans. Simon asked them about reasons behind the occurrence of mental health issues in males and ways through which males can prevent them from it.

According to the latest figures given by Central Statistics Organization (CSO), 10 Irish people die in a week and out of them eight are males. CSO revealed that as per estimates, 507 people died by suicide in Ireland in 2012 and Cork City had the highest rate of people attempting suicides in the whole Ireland.

A report released by Cork Samaritans on male suicides highlights that factors that are responsible for higher rate of suicides in Irish society are unemployment and masculinity.

Sources reported that a seminar will be hosted by the Cork Samaritans and the NSRF on 'Responding to suicidal crisis' on Thursday at Cork City Hall.
