Wawona Packing Company Recalls Fruits, including Peaches

The Wawona Packing Company is recalling certain lots of whole peaches, nectarines, plums and pluots which were packed between June 1, 2014 and July 12, 2014. The company issued the voluntarily because some of the products being contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Wawona Packing has notified its retailers of the specific lots which are being recalled. No other products will be impacted by this recall. Till date, no illnesses have been linked to this recall.

The fruit was distributed to several national retailers like Sam's Club, Costco and Trader Joe's.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious infections which may be fatal in young children, elderly people and others who have weak immune systems. Although, healthy individuals may only suffer short-term symptoms like high fever, stiffness, severe headache, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, the company has suggested them to consult medical expert. Listeria infection may also cause still births and miscarriages in pregnant women.

The products that were recalled were shipped to retailers and wholesalers directly who resell the products. Since the distributor did not know the location of the companies that bought the products directly from the customers, the company is issuing a recall all over the nation.

Wawona Packing has already notified all its business customers and has also requested that they remove the recalled products from the markets. Wawona Packing is voluntarily recalling all these products as it has consulted the US Food and Drug Administration.

"We are aware of no illnesses related to the consumption of these products", said Brent Smittcamp, President of Wawona Packing Co. "By taking the precautionary step of recalling product, we will minimize even the slightest risk to public health, and that is our priority".

The recall was initiated after the internal company testing. The company says that it has shut down the implicated packing lines, retrofitted equipment, sanitized the facility and also retested. Daily test results have also been negative.
