Impact of River Flooding will be Most Pronounced in Ireland and UK

The Joint Research Centre's (JRC) 'Climate Impacts in Europe' report calls for measures to tackle climate change. If steps are not taken to control climate change then the report authors warn that the economic cost of sea and river flooding will treble.

Ireland and the UK have been highlighted in the report that will witness the impact of river flooding. The impacts will be positive as well as negative. The positive part will deal with rise in tourism and an increase in agriculture production. Negative part will be damage from winter storms.

Flooding has already cost a lot to insurers as they have shelled out almost €750m in claims since 2000. Though the Office of Public Works announced that they would be ready with an extensive flood relief scheme, the JRC has suggested the damage will take place in other towns and cities if temperature increases by 3.5C by the end of the year.

The report authors said economic costs would increase even if policies are adopted to lessen the worst effects. The report includes the impact of climate change on differnet sectors like agriculture, energy, river floods and transport from the period 2071 and 2100.

It seems that cost will increase despite efforts are made. Cost of sea flooding will increase from €996m to around €3bn in Ireland and the UK. The cost will increase to €2.4bn even if warming is kept to 2C. If no measures are taken then agriculture yields will drop by 2% in Ireland.

"This increase in damages would occur mainly in the UK and Ireland, where damages are tripled up to €3.3bn a year (up from €872m)", unveiled the report.
