Make Super material Graphene at Home

Super material graphene can now be made at home in your kitchen blender, say researchers who have made it a reality.

A group of researchers from Trinity College Dublin in Ireland were working out the best possible method to mass produce graphene. They were banking upon their knowledge that it was possible to remove thin sheets of graphene from bigger lots of graphite.

They just need to find out the most effective way to shear off those layers. Researchers added surfactant to ease the layers apart of graphite in a laboratory mixer. They allowed it to spin and the result was what they have thought graphene.

Further assessment through electron microscopy confirmed that they were producing graphene only. Another big high of their research was that they were producing the magical stuff at the rate of five grams per hour.

"The material is of a quality close to the best in the literature, but with production rates apparently hundreds of times higher", affirmed Andrea Ferrari, an expert on graphene at the University of Cambridge.

They thought to make the process cost effective and ended up on finalizing kitchen blender and a little washing-up liquid. The technique worked but there were some specifications involved in the process. The exact amount of dishwashing liquid was dependent on the properties of the graphite being used.

It will get determined only through expensive analytical chemistry equipment. Moreover, not all graphite converted into graphene and separation will also be required which will become a tedious process at home.

But then also the technique does offer industrial promise. As per calculations, a 10,000-litre vat with the right motor could result into 100 grams of graphene per hour.
