Extreme Weather Events Push Climate Change back on the Political Agenda

Britain's wettest winter and Australia's hottest summer, extreme weather events have pushed climate change back on the political agenda. Nearly 200 governments have accepted to work out a deal at a summit in Paris in December 2015.

A U. N. panel of scientists has forecasted that increasing global temperatures will cause extreme change in weather and rise in sea levels. This deal will help in tackling the abovementioned problems.

As a part of the deal, the 1997 Kyoto Protocol would be replaced. The protocol is an international treaty that sets binding obligations on industrialized countries to decrease emissions of greenhouse gases.

Wild weather is proving harmful for some of the most developed parts of the world. This has put politicians in those nations under pressure to find out some ways to deal with the issue.

U. N. Climate Change Chief Christiana Figueres said, "Attention has been increasing sadly because of the increase in the frequency and intensity of natural events and disasters".

Last week, U. S. President Barack Obama and French President Francois Hollande supported an 'ambitious' climate deal in 2015. The deal is expected to come in force from 2020.

Australia had the warmest weather with heatwaves, droughts and bushfires last year. The U. N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change said there are chances that human activities were the main cause of global warming since the mid-20th century.

Most nations have not yet revealed about measures that would be taken by them to curb carbon emissions in 2015. China, the top greenhouse gas emitter has added an incentive to cut emissions that causes air pollution due to increasing use of coal.
