Mikaela Shiffrin, American Teenager, Wins World Cup Slalom in Austria

The world cup win for American teenager Mikaela Shiffrin, from Eagle-Vail, Colo., has been phenomenal wherein she undoubtedly performed as the best slalom skier in the world. She secured the win in World Cup slalom in Austria on Tuesday. A night race was won by her just 38 days before the same event will be taking place at the Sochi Olympics.

The win is the third for her in the season and the seventh overall. She claimed the victory by giving 0.90-second first-run lead to her competitors. The 18-year-old racer overpowered her mistakes in her final attempt. She ran for 1 minute, 45.83 seconds and defeated Frida Hansdotter of Sweden by 0.83 seconds.

The third position was occupied by Maria Pietilae-Holmner and was defeated by 1.14. Shiffrin said, “It's nice to sing my national anthem a couple of races before the Olympics. Hopefully I can sing it again in Sochi”.

Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany came fourth and lost by 1.40. Shiffrin joins Perrine Pelen of France and Croatia's Janica Kostelic in the list of winners as the only teenager striker to claim victory in seven World Cup slaloms.

Her victory on Tuesday made her the only American skier to win minimum three slaloms in one season twice. The success was earlier achieved by Phil Mare in 1981-'82, Tamara McKinney in 1982-'83 and Bode Miller in 2001-'02.
