Canada's Alex Gough, Sam Edney, Tristan Walker and Justin Snith have claimed a silver medal at a World Cup luge team relay race. The race was organized on Sunday. The Canadian team clocked at 2 minutes, 12.172 seconds. It took less than a second for them after the golden German team of Natalie Geisenberger, Felix Loch, Toni Eggert and Sascha Benecken clocked at 2:11.798. Third place was secured by Italy at 2:12.266.
Three sleds are the part of the luge team relay. It comprises a women's single, a men's single, and a doubles crew. These take one run for a combined final time. This is something new and will be included at the 2014 Sochi Olympics for the first time.
A pad is hit by athletes at the end of their run, thereby opening the gate at the start for the next team member.
The 29-year-old Edney, an 11-year veteran of the national squad, said that it was a great day for them to win the silver medal. He added, "Going into an Olympic year, it's nice to show ourselves we are still there, and knowing that we still push together to get better each week until the big race with the final goal being in February".
