A team of seismologists has commenced its mission to drill into the sea bed in order to find out the earthquake origins.
The team has already fastened the deep sea drilling ship Chikyu. The ship aims to drill beneath the ocean bed at the Kii Peninsula (located in Southwestern Japan) and to reach to take samples from Nankai Trough.
This multi year project by the team was started in the year 2007. The current mission will take four months to complete. Its aim is to drill 3,600 meter down the water for taking crust samples. Once this sample is collected the next objective would be to drill 5200 meter down next year and reaching to the place, which is the actual origin of earthquake.
"It would be unprecedented to drill directly into a seismogenic zone, the area believed to release great energy and cause crusts to slide along fault lines and trigger tsunami", said Tamano Omata, a Researcher for the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC).
Recently, experts had issued a warning saying that Nankai Trough will be an origin of a massive earthquake very soon and this could create havoc. Nankai Trough is a point where the Philippine Sea plate comes under the Eurasian plate.
Last year, Japanese government had issued a report, according to which as many as 320,000 people could be killed if an earthquake hits the area. This projected disaster would be much more in number than the disaster caused by Tsunami in March 2011.
