On Wednesday, the European Parliament voted that the use of biofuels should be regulated in the European Union.
It is, reportedly, one amongst the many potential changes brought to the climate-change policies of the bloc. Investors are of the opinion that these have been leading to uncertainty. Also, energy investments were being repressed by the same.
A proposal had been put forth to curb the food-based biofuels' share in trucks and cars by 2020 to 6% of the total consumption. It has been found that the plan has been approved by the Parliament.
The same meant that the EU would need to depend on a faster expansion of electric cars so as to meet the goal of gaining 10% of transport energy of Europe from renewable sources.
However, EU governments are still to green signal the decision before the same is implemented. It is being said that the verdict would depict a turn aside from the 4-year-old rules. These are aimed at promoting biofuel use. Biofuels is a general term given to gasoline and diesel substitutes gained from plant matter.
"The biofuels debate was very difficult because the vote was so close; industry still would not have certainty regarding its investments", said lawmaker Corinne Lepage, who was driving the legislation.
