After having announced in October 2102 that he was a "proud gay man," Puerto Rican featherweight boxer Orlando Cruz has now proposed to his longtime boyfriend José Manuel.
The proposal was made by 32-year-old Cruz - the first openly gay male professional boxer - in a video message posted to the popular social network Facebook this week; and it comes barely two months ahead of Cruz's WBO Featherweight Title fight against Mexico's Orlando Solido. Cruz and Solido will fight for the vacant WBO featherweight title on October 12 in Las Vegas.
Though the Facebook video posted by Cruz is in Spanish, an NBCLatino translation of the video-post has revealed that Cruz considers Manuel to be "a very special person" in his life; and wants Manuel to know that he needs him and misses him a lot.
Proposing to Manuel on the social network, Cruz said in the video: "I want to tell you and share with your friends and my friends if you want to marry me. I want you to be part of my life and me be part of yours."
In response to Cruz's video, Manuel posted a heartfelt video of his own, accepting the proposal. According to NBCLatinos translation, Manuel said: "I want to say yes. I accept marrying you because I love you and adore you. Yes, I do want to marry you because I love you, I love you, I love you very much."
