As per recent updates, officials are endeavoring to find out the reason behind sudden increase in dolphin deaths in Virginia and other East Coast states.
According to research coordinator for the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center, Susan Barco, "We've had a steady number coming in at the beginning of the summer, and starting last week, the numbers spiked. We're just trying to keep our head above water".
Figures have unveiled that five beached dolphins were found in Virginia on Thursday. Earlier in July, roughly 60 dead dolphins were discovered in some regions of Norfolk and also along the southern part of the Chesapeake Bay.
According to Virginia's stranding team, this rise has been linked to mass deaths that occurred in 1987. In this year, more than 750 carcasses were washed away from New Jersey to Florida. Then a few years' later morbillivirus akin to measles was found to be the reason behind these deaths.
This year the response team gathered the ruins of 87 dolphins. Usually, 60 dolphin carcasses are witnessed in this season.
A program including eight staff members and six interns has been initiated by the authorities concerned. They have been counting number of deaths of dolphins and keeping up with the figures.
