Turkey aims at becoming a player in electric car market

With the Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey (TÜBITAK) offering to provide 100 percent in research assistance for the development and production of electric cars in the country, and with Turkish Science, Industry and Technology Ministry promising to purchase 200 electric cars over five years, Turkish state institutions have also decided to provide full support to local electric car production.

About Turkey's intentions of having a toehold in the electric car sector, especially after the having failed to make a mark in the fossil fuel vehicle technology sector, Turkish Science, Industry and Technology Minister Nihat Ergün said that Turkey will strive to "make a name for itself with domestic electric car production and development."

Noting that the TÜBITAK will grant 100 percent in research and development aid to manufacturers of electric cars, Ergün said that the electric-car endeavor would probably lead to a collaboration of universities, as well as private and public sector players.

The disclosure about Turkey's plans in the direction of electric car production comes close on the heels of a recently introduced revision which aims at providing incentives to the automotive sector in general.

Turkey's program for becoming a player in the electric car segment will seemingly begin the domestic production of a critical section of the electric car, under the guidance of universities and private and government research and development institutions.
