It is becoming really difficult for many to understand as why is ECB acting overly generous with loans to Spanish banks. Does their rules allow them same? If no, why is the central bank acting the way? These are some questions to which many people and authorities are seeking the answers but unable to find one.
The news is talking about the issue that has been bought to the knowledge of all by a German newspaper, Weekly Welt am Sonntag, in its Sunday edition, where it has talked about its claims upon the European Central Bank, which it says, is lending Spanish banks billions of Euros under certain very generous conditions, which even the rules do not allow them.
The Spanish banks are under heavy bad debts since 2008 due to the collapse of Spain's real estate sector. According to the reports of the newspaper, ECB has given high loans worth €16.6 billion ($21.33 billion) to the Spanish banks, in return of which, it is easily accepting Spanish government bonds as top-tier collateral.
Despite several efforts of contacting the officials at the Frankfurt-based bank, no response to phone calls and comments to emails have been heard yet, which could turn the matter more crucial.
