Study shows size of brain is not linked to IQ level

According to new research, the brainsize is not linked to the level of IQ in a person in a great way. The new study is contrary to widely held belief that the size of brain affects the intelligence quotient (IQ) of the person.

The researchers said that larger size of the brain dies nit guarantee high IQ. The researchers used brain imaging methods to conduct a reliable assessments of in-vivo brain volume and investigations of its association with IQ. A team of international researchers conducted the meta-analysis examining correlations between in-vivo brain volume and IQ and found that the size of the brain does not affect the IQ level to a great level. They studied data from 148 samples comprising over 8000 participants showed that there was a very weak association between brain size and IQ.

JakobPietschnig from the Institute of Applied Psychology of the University of Vienna, said, “The presently observed association means that brain volume plays only a minor role in explaining IQ test performance in humans. Although a certain association is observable, brain volume appears to be of only little practical relevance. Rather, brain structure and integrity appear to be more important as a biological foundation of IQ, whilst brain size works as one of many compensatory mechanisms of cognitive functions.”
