China’s Robotic Telescope Present On Moon for The Past Two Years

You might not be aware of the fact that China has placed a small, robotic telescope on the moon back in 2013. Chinese researchers have lately unveiled that this telescope has been perfectly working since then.

The telescope reached on moon in December 2013 with the Chang'e 3 lander. This telescope performs the work of observing almost all kind of things, which is not possible from earth because of thick atmosphere. Jing Wang from the National Astronomical Observatories in Beijing said, “There is no atmosphere on the Moon, so unlike Earth, the ultraviolet light from celestial objects can be detected on the Moon”.

Another reason for placing the telescope on the moon is that its rotation speed is much slower than our planet, must be around 27 times slower. Therefore, it allows the telescope to keep a tab on a particular star for many days, which again is not feasible from earth.

The 15-centimetre telescope has been built to detect ultraviolet rays. The telescope, which is the first robot telescope to operate on the moon’s surface, has made 2,000 hours of observations and monitored 40 stars.

Not only this, the telescope has more to its kitty it has captured the image of the Pinwheel Galaxy, which is 21 million light-years away. The researchers have even shared the results of telescope’s 18 month observation.

Though it is not the first telescope to be used on the moon, being robotic in working makes it challenging to remain operational.
