FCC report reveals that top ISPs largely deliver promised broadband speeds

In a recently-released report about broadband speeds in the US, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has revealed that leading Internet service providers (ISPs) in the country largely deliver broadband speeds they promise, or even better.

However, the report - titled `Measuring Broadband America Fixed Broadband Report' of 2014 - has also revealed that though the country's top ISPs apparently `over-deliver' when it comes to broadband speeds, some ISPs need to make improvements in terms of consistency. The agency examined a total of 14 ISPs for its report.

According to the FCC report, the ISPs that deliver the advertised - or higher - broadband speeds are largely those providers that include fiber for the network infrastructure. Some providers, like Verizon FiOS, Comcast and Cablevision, consistently deliver up to 120 percent of their promised download speeds. In comparison, as per the report, "providers using DSL technology generally failed to meet their advertised speeds."

The FCC's findings related to the broadband speeds being delivered by ISPs in the US are based on extensive series of tests carried out by the agency.

The country-wide broadband measurements were performed by the FCC via the so-called off-the-shelf routers - along with special monitoring software - which the agency installed with the help of 10,000 volunteers. The routers delivered network performance statistics to the FCC for more than a year, but it was in September 2013 that the formal measurement took place.
