Swimmer Trying to Show Bravado by Jumping Towards Stingray Manages Lucky Escape

A swimmer was enjoying in the Gold Coast of Australia. May be thinking to show his bravado, the man dived on the top of the two-meter stingray present in the shallow water.

After doing the diving act, the man walked away safe. But things were not that great at the side of stingray that strongly reacted after the man's diving attempt. It could have proved dangerous for the diver, but he had a lucky escape.

As per experts, stingray might have felt trapped and would have got charged due to defensive mechanism. It is very important to remember that they are not territorial and do not mind attacking if they are provoked.

Dr. Jonathan Werry said such behaviour is rare, but stingray can exhibit the same if it feels threatened and is unable to escape. "Usually what a ray has is a flight response, because most of whatever is after them is a predator like a large shark, so in most cases they want to get away", affirmed Dr. Werry.

It happens quite rarely that stingrays use their barbs to attack. It happened in 2006 when TV personality Steve Irwin died due to stingray's barb. In reality, barbs are meant to be used for self defense.
