Climate Change Takes Toll on Australia’s Weather

The Climate Council's latest report, 'Seasonal Update: Abnormal Autumn 2014', tries to explain climate change being witnessed in Australia. The nation has witnessed harsh summer and a really warm autumn.

Even then, researchers are saying Australia may not have any respite and global temperatures would continue to increase. All credit for the same goes to the climate change.

The report has pointed out three main findings. First, the two years ending with April 24 were the hottest on record. Also, once the data for May is assessed, the new record would be set ending with May 2014.

Second, the average temperature across Australia was more than the long-term average (1961-1990) and was 1.1ºC. May is exhibiting the same signs of abnormally high temperatures.

Last, the temperature is increasing and is expected to follow the same pattern with more hot days and few cool days. Fire-weather days are expected to increase in southern and eastern Australia.

Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne are setting new record when it comes to consecutive number of May days when the mercury touched 20ºC or higher. In the report, Climate Council said about warmer weather in April and May, "Are part of a longer-term trend towards hotter conditions in the summer months and more warm spells in autumn and winter".

Many meteorologists are predicting Australia to witness an El Nino effect, which would be characterized by below-average rainfall in the east and south. The Climate Council warns El Nino could worsen the impacts of climate change resulting into hotter and drier weather.

Experts warn it is high time now to take action on climate change as otherwise things are going to get worse only.
