Guests on a cruise sponsored by Chicago's Shedd Aquarium and Un-Cruise Adventures got to rare chance to feast their eyes on two oarfish in the shallow waters along the coastline of Baja, Mexico.
A video of the sea creatures posted on YouTube shows that the two oarfish were nearly 15 feet in length, but that is not their ultimate size as an oarfish grow up to 36 feet in length.
As the oarfish lives at great depths of up to 3,280 feet, humans rarely see them near the surface of the water in seas.
In a description of the rare video, Shedd Aquarium wrote, "During a recent Shedd Adventures trip to Baja, participants witnessed not one, but two rare oarfish in shallow waters. Here's a video of one of their encounters."
Even if these fish come to the surface, it is unlikely that they will end up on the menu at a seafood restaurant because their flabby and gooey flesh does not taste very good.
In October last year, two oarfish had been found dead on the coast of southern California. One of the two fish was filled with parasites, while the other was pregnant. It suggests that the two oarfish that were recently seen shallow waters of Baja might not be in bad health.
Characterized by shiny, silver body and unique red crest on head, the oarfish is the world's longest bony fish.
