US Calls for Comprehensive, Global Strategy to Protect Oceans

On Monday, US Secretary of State John Kerry inaugurated a two-day international ocean conference hosted by the US Department of State. Main aim of the conference was to discuss the danger to the oceans and steps that should be taken to protect them.

In the conference, Kerry said over-fishing, pollution and acidification are some main threats being faced by the oceans. Kerry has called for the comprehensive, global strategy to protect the oceans.

'Our Ocean' conference held in Washington, D.C. was attended by around 400 members from more than 80 nations including World Bank President Jim Yong Kim. "Stewardship of our ocean is not a one-person event, it is a national event, it is a country event, it is a universal requirement all across this planet", said Kerry to the conference participants.

It is vital to understand the importance and the level of safety that oceans provide. As per Kerry, the ocean supports livelihood of up to 12 percent of the world's population. Moreover, the protection of oceans is a significant international security issue.

One-third of the world's fish stocks are over-exploited and rest of them are fished to their absolute maximum sustainable level, affirmed Kerry. He also focused on marine pollution by saying that round 500 dead zones has been created in the oceans and there the life is not possible.

These dead zones eventually will become a significant part of marine life that may not exist as life there is simply not possible. To tackle these challenges, it is vital for nations to get together and take a single comprehensive, global ocean strategy.
