Google has issued an apology for putting up a Doodle which honored Japanese Go player Honinbo Shusaku on its UK site on June 6 - the 70th anniversary of D-Day, which marked the beginning of the invasion of Nazi-held Europe by the Allies.
In its apology for the D-Day Doodle blunder, Google said that the Doodle honoring Shusaku was a global Doodle which was uploaded on the company's UK site "in error."
The Doodle which Google initially put up on the Google. co. uk website for June 6 featured a stylized picture of Honinbo Shusaku. That Doodle was later taken down after the move was widely criticized on Twitter.
Following the backlash, Google removed the Shusaku Doodle, and replaced it with a 'Remembering D-Day' link its Cultural Institute, where letters, photos and maps related to the Normandy landings can be accessed by the users.
Noting that Google had "always intended to highlight a new exhibition of imagery and archive material commemorating D-Day on our home page," Peter Barron - Google's director of communications - said in the company's apology: "Unfortunately a technical error crept in and for a short period this morning an international doodle also appeared. We're sorry for the mistake, and we're proud to honour those who took part in D-Day."
