Federal officials from the National Labor Relations Board have filed a formal complaint against Walmart for violating workers' right to protest and strike.
It has been found that Walmart has illegally fired, threatened and punished around 60 of their employees in 14 states. These were the employees who have taken part in protests against the company for low wages and working conditions.
Similar charges were made against the company in 2013 as well. But at that time, the officials did not file a formal complaint. They held off filing the complaint, as they wanted to work out other options with the company.
It now seems that those talks have gone in vain. On the other hand, Wal-Mart was of the view that it has done nothing wrong.
Its spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan said that filing of a complaint will act as an opportunity for them to put forth the facts in front of a judge. "No reasonable person thinks it's OK for people to come and go from their scheduled shift without being held accountable", affirmed Buchanan.
The company has been given the deadline of January 28 to reply to the complaint. After the same, the case will go before a judge and if Wal-Mart is found liable then it could pay extra money to its workers. It will also be required by the company to take back any disciplinary action it has taken against its employees.
