500th Volcano Eruption Covers Japanese City in Ash

A volcano eruption in Japan covered the entire city with ash. Immediately after the volcano eruption was reported, a clean-up operation began to clear the city. Mount Sakurajima is being shown in footage to spew dark plumes
5,000 m in the air.

The eruption was the 500th for this year. Residents of the nearby Kagoshima were being seen using masks and umbrellas to protect themselves from ash, which was falling from the sky on to the streets.

Residents in a southern Japanese city were engaged in washing ash off the streets on Monday. Sakurajima is known to be one of Japan's most active volcanoes. It has showed its most powerful eruption in decades on Sunday. It spewed ash plumes as high as three miles high into the air, covering the entire city with ash.

A city official said, "The smoke was a bit dramatic, but we are kind of used to it". The official agreed to say this on the condition of anonymity, as he was not allowed to speak to the media.

Rumblings and showers of ash have become a kind of usual thing for residents in Kagoshima City, southern Japan, with 500 eruptions already this year from the ominously nearby Sakurajima volcano.
