Pacu fish found in Michigan Lake

Last week on July 9, Holley Luft, a metro Detroit woman, caught a 14-inch Pacu fish in her hook while fishing at Lake St. Clair. The fish was named River Monsters by British fisherman Jeremy Wade of the Animal Planet TV show.

Pacu fish is a South American relative of the Piranha. It is an omnivorous fish and has human-like teeth. This fish can grow up to 55 pounds in the wild.

Back in 2011, this fish was largely blamed for the death of two men in Papua New Guinea, who died of blood loss after something in the water bit off their testicles. Pacus there have reportedly earned the nickname "the ball cutter" after this.

Commenting on this, expert Henrik Carl told NPR in 2013 that while the Pacu's "mouth is not so big, human testicles are just a natural target. It's not normal to get your testicles bitten off, of course, but it can happen".

In the last week's incident when Holley Luft looked at the fish on removing it from the hook, she wasn't sure about what it was and initially thought it a blue gill. Things became clear when she properly saw it in light and observed its teeth.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources believes that it is likely that this particular fish was someone's pet and the owner must have dumped it into the lake after it got too big in size or maybe too aggressive for an aquarium.

The fish ultimately landed in the State of Michigan DNR Library for Invasive Species. One of the investigation agent on the job said he had seen only half a dozen of this fish in his 20 years of job.

This fish is very rare and not found much in the waters because Pacu are not likely to survive the winters in the Great Lakes. But, this fish can be legally owned and kept as a pet. It is easily available for about $12 from any of the tropical fish stores.
