August and September will also witness supermoons

It is reported that the next two months sky gazers will be able towitness the so-called "supermoons".The one that will be seen in August can be termed as "extra-supermoon" due to its bigger size.

The moon appears bigger and brighter compared to its normal state, whenever it comes closer to our planet. Such a supermoon was witnessed last June when the moon appeared 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than other full moons of the year. The term given to such a moon is "perigee moon".

Full moon witnessed this weekend and also the ones to be witnessed in the coming two months will be larger than the full moons that are witnessed in rest of the months due to fact that full moons that occur on the perigee side of the moon's orbit seem extra big and bright.

The moon follows an elliptical path around Earth with one side 'perigee' is about 50,000km closer than the other that is 'apogee'. Further perigee can be understood by the fact that the moon is on average about 384,400km from Earth and at perigee, it averages 362,600km and at apogee it is about 405,400km.

This year the perigee moon will be noticed three times: last Saturday and then on August 10 and September 9.

In the month of August particularly the moon will become full during the same hour as perigee there by making it an "extra-supermoon".
