Astronauts will soon Enjoy Coffee at International Space Station

It was a dream of many astronauts to have hot brewing coffee at the space station. To actualize their dream, Argotec and coffee company Lavazza are working with the Italian Space Agency (ISA) to get espresso on space.

The machine, ISSpresso, will be installed at the International Space Station (ISS). It is the first machine that will work in a weightless environment. Its working is bit different than normal coffee machine as it is based on the principles of the fluid dynamics of liquids.

In the machine, the plastic tube carrying water inside a normal coffee machine is replaced with a steel tube in the ISSpresso. It has been done to ensure that it is able to withstand pressure of more than 5,800 psi.

It has capsule system that will allow prepare hot beverages. Lavazza said about the machine, "The machine is so complex that it weighs about 20 kilograms since there are back-ups of all the critical components for safety reasons in accordance with the specifications agreed upon with the Italian Space Agency".

Giuseppe Lavazza, Vice-President of Lavazza, said they are quite proud of working on this project. They hope the project will be able to improve the living and nutrition quality of astronauts involved in long missions.

Astronauts will get coffee in the pouches and they will have the beverage through straw. ISSpresso will provide different flavors to astronauts on the space station. Addition of multiple redundant systems will ensure the service continues for many years to come.
