The strong X1-class solar flare released on Saturday was responsible for disruptions in many radio communication networks on Earth, but for very short duration. Researchers believe that the strong flare could lead to minor geomagnetic storm by April 2 and could even strengthen Earth's Northern Lights.
"The explosion above sunspot AR2017 sent shock waves racing through the sun's atmosphere at speeds as high as 4,800 km/s (11 million mph)", said astronomer Tony Phillips.
Experts said the Earth remained protected against the flare. Flare's harmful radiations cannot pass through the Earth's dense atmosphere. But they can interrupt the atmosphere where communication signals travel.
This is the reason that some communication signals got messed up when the charged particles wave had hit. The solar flare was measure on a five-category scale and X rated at the highest level. It has been found that X1-class solar flare is as much as 10 times more powerful than M-class event. Not only this, it is said to be 100 times stronger than category C.
It was on July 5, 2013 that it was revealed that sun is at the peak of 11-year-old solar cycle. Due to which, it has been releasing harmful X-rays and gamma rays that could cause chronic health problems. As per experts, the solar cycle should have been peaked in 2011. But it could not due to delay in initiation of active phase.
There are chances that the intense solar flare could recur in coming days, which can lead to disruption in aviation and communication systems. Experts warned that some satellite systems can also be affected, but the severity of it is not known. They have claimed that the severity depends on location and path of the satellite.
