Skeleton Finding: King Alfred the Great or Richard III

After a piece of male pelvic bone was identified as that of King Alfred the Great, the recent discovery from Winchester has been fascinating for many historians. A skeleton, which was found under a Leicester Car Park, was doubted as belonging to Richard III.

And a thorough excavation carried out in 2012, further confirmed with DNA examination, revealed that the skeleton did belong to the monarch's family.

In an announcement made on Friday, the University of Winchester stated that the DNA evidence suggests that these bones may either belong to King Alfred the Great or Edward the Elder (King Alfred's son).

However, Dr. Katie Tucker still says that it will actually be very difficult to prove the link between these bones and the monarch's family.

It is noteworthy to mention that Alfred the Great had passed away in 899 while Richard III was killed much later in the year 1485.

"This is a path that may be worth pursuing but it's a very long way to go back, an extra 500 years to go back than Richard III. It's always going to be more of a difficult task to find a descendant", said Dr. Tucker.

Tucker informed that many people have been contacting them saying that they are King Alfred's descendants. These people are also sending their family trees to the researchers.
