Germany Overturn the Circumcision Ban

German Parliament's decision on Dec. 12 has voted in favor of protecting infant male circumcision but only till a limit. In context to same, the legal body has passed a bill 434 to 100, with 46 abstentions.

The legislation has declared the above decision in response to the international outcry against a ruling that came from a Cologne court in June criminalizing circumcision further creating uncertainty about the legality of Jewish and Muslim religious circumcision throughout the country.

The rulings were followed by lawsuits against mohels, who actually perform the Jewish ritual circumcisions, in Berlin and Bavaria.

"We commend the German legislature, and the government of Chancellor Merkel, for their response to the Cologne court decision and welcome the legislation which upholds religious freedom and offers legal security to the faith communities of Germany", Mr. Nathan Diament, the Orthodox Union's executive director for public policy, said in a statement.

The German bill has clearly stated about the Jerusalem Post, which suggests conduction of circumcision only according to the established medical standards adding that the procedure can be performed by the trained persons in the first six months after birth, who are authorized. The law has really relieved Muslims and Jews in the region.
