NASA Making Efforts to Test ‘Flying Saucer’ after Delays

NASA is working with the U.S. Navy on the Hawaiian island of Kauai to find if testing of flying saucer into Earth's atmosphere can be carried out in late June after the test got cancelled lately owing to bad weather conditions.

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory project manager Mark Adler said due to winds, every launch opportunity had to be missed. For the test, it is important that winds should not be flowing as then only helium balloon could carry the disc-shaped vehicle over the Pacific.

Postponing the test costs the space agency dear. NASA has already invested $150 million in this project and extending the same would cost some more money. If NASA is not able to carry out the test this summer, then the test could be postponed till 2015.

Therefore, NASA is working out with the Navy on the Hawaiian island of Kauai to carry out the tests during June this year only. The mission has been designed to test a new supersonic vehicle and giant parachute in Earth's stratosphere, where the conditions are similar to Mars.

For past many years, NASA is using the same parachute design to reduce the speed of spacecraft streaking through the thin Martian atmosphere. But to land astronomers on Mars, there is need for stronger parachute.

The newer flying saucer technique involves a special vehicle which is 100 feet in diameter. It is twice as large as the one that carried Curiosity on Mars. Project scientist Ian Clark said they are still quite enthusiastic. "We're still very optimistic about the opportunities that we think we'll have in front of us to do this test", affirmed Clark.
