NASA scientists create flyover video of Pluto’s interesting features

Using the images and data collected by the New Horizons spacecraft and digital elevation models of Pluto and its moon Charon, NASA scientists have created flyover video that offer stunning new perspectives of the many unusual features of the distant icy world.

The flyover video begins over the highlands to the southwest of the massive nitrogen ice plain that has informally been called Sputnik Planitia. The viewer first sees the western margin of Sputnik, cratered terrain of Cthulhu Macula, and the blocky mountain ranges that are located within the plains.

Then the viewer sees rugged & fractured highlands of Voyager Terra in the north before turning southward over Pioneer Terra, which exhibits deep, wide pits.

Digital mapping and rendering for the flyover video were performed by John Blackwell and Paul Schenk of Houston-based Lunar & Planetary Institute. In the Pluto system, all the feature names are informal.

The new perspectives of the unusual features of Pluto and its largest moon might reshape researchers’ views of the distant icy world.
