The topic of creating babies from three people has become a hot topic of discussion in the UK. The government seems to supporting the idea of using advanced form of IVF, which has been claimed by the scientific community to be safe.
But, it is completely up to people to decide what they want to do, however, doctors are of the belief that the new form of IVF has huge potential to save lives. Mitochondrial disease is known to impact one in every 6,500 babies born in the UK and leaves those babies with insufficient energy and causes muscle weakness in their bodies. However, in extreme cases it does not leave babies with enough fuel to keep the heart pumping the blood on the body, which leads to death as well in many cases.
Mitochondria -- a tiny power station -- are present in abundance inside every cell of the body. But, if defects are caused in a high proportion of them then cells run out of the energy. Mother passes mitochondria to children.
This is the reason that the Department of Health has supported the idea of using a new form of the IVF to ensure prevention of newborns from the mitochondrial disease. It is currently assessing the legal and ethical implications of the new form of the IVF. After this, the fertility regulator, the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority the fertility regulator will decide if individual clinics should be allowed to proceed or not.
The technique works by using DNA from three people to create babies as there is a small amount of DNA in the mitochondria. But there are many concerns among people that a permanent change could be created in human inheritance because of the new technique among many other issues.
