Sprint to start throttling data speeds for its heaviest unlimited data users from June 1

According to FierceWireless, US wireless carrier Sprint has revealed in a recent announcement that it has plans underway to start throttling data speeds for its heaviest unlimited data users from next month.

As per the report, data-speed throttling for the heaviest unlimited data users of Sprint, as well as its prepaid brands - Virgin and Boost Mobile - will begin with effect from June 1. Notifications, via text messages, are apparently being sent out to users to inform them about a new data management measure which Sprint and its prepaid brands will soon put in place.

Hinting at the imminent data-speed throttling move, Sprint said on its newly updated FAQ page that "congestion management" will knock down the mobile speeds for all customers that fall within the carrier's top 5 percent of data users.

Despite the fact that Sprint has not clearly specified precisely how much data usage will land users in the carrier's top five percentile, it has mentioned in the FAQ that any customer using 5GB or more will probably fall into this category.

With Sprint gradually changing its strategy surrounding unlimited data, the recently-announced data-seed throttling move is being described by the carrier as a new restriction which, it claims, is necessary for fair allocation of resources for times when network bandwidth is not infinite and during times of network congestion.
