Bright Fireball Lights up Skies over Southwestern Ontario

A brilliant fireball show took place in sky over southwestern Ontario on Tuesday night. The bright basketball-sized fireball was seen at 10.24 pm as per local time. The fireball was almost as bright as the full moon lights up the sky, said researchers.

It was also spotted in seven all-sky cameras operated by the Southern Ontario Meteor Network. Two cameras in Ohio and Pennsylvania operated in unison with NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office also saw the fireball.

Researchers from Western University are now hoping a help from local people to recover one or may be more than one meteorite that may have crashed north of St. Thomas. As per the researchers, the fireball exploded around 47 miles above Port Dover, Ontario and then moved towards west and ultimately broke up at an altitude of 20 miles between Aylmer and St. Thomas.

University officials suggested, "Meteorites are not dangerous, but any recovered meteorites should be placed in a clean plastic bag or container and be handled as little as possible to preserve their scientific information".

For now, the researchers are not sure where the meteorites would be found. But as per their view, they may be found in a small hole produced to the fall. The best way to recognize meteorites is by their dark and scalloped exterior. Secondly, they are quite dense than normal rocks.

Meteorites have metal content in them and due to it, they attract fridge magnet. The researchers said they are looking out for people who might have seen the event or have found fragments of meteorites. For those who want to be meteorite hunters in this event, need to take prior permission from land owners before investigating their private land, said the university officials.
