UCF researchers create high-powered battery with supercapacitors

A team of researchers at the University of Central Florida (UCF) has recently disclosed its creation of a new high-powered battery which will last for days after only a few seconds of charging.

According to the details shared by the researchers, the new high-powered battery is packed with supercapacitors which have the capability to store a huge amount of energy. The battery can be recharged more than 30,000 times; as against the currently available lithium ion phone batteries that have a lifespan of between 300 and 500 charges.

The supercapacitors-packed new battery created by UCF researchers could potentially be used in electric vehicles, smartphones and wearable devices because it is basically a small, thin piece of flexible metal of the size of a finger nail.

The fast-charging high-powered battery prototype has been created by the UCF team by using tiny wires, with one nanometre thickness. The wires, coated with a high energy shell, have highly conductive cores to facilitate fast charging.

Highlighting the fast-charging and longer-lasting capability of the supercapacitors-packed battery, UCF researcher Professor Nitin Choudhary told the Telegraph in London: "If they were to replace the batteries with these supercapacitors, you could charge your mobile phone in a few seconds and you wouldn't need to charge it again for over a week."
