The results of Tesco for the first quarter of the year have been disappointing. The first few lines of its press release depicted that they are not confident about the business.
The release said that they were positive and improving like-for-like or declining sales in all categories of food items except frozen and chilled food.
According to figures, in the three months to May 26, like-for-like sales in the U. K. were down between 0.8% and 1.6%. Tesco spent £1bn in 2012/13 on the recruitment of 8,000 new store staff. It also re-launched thousands of own label-products providing refreshing look and feel of the stores. But, nothing helped Tesco from going backwards again.
The chief executive of Tesco, Philip Clarke, said that sales of consumer electronics were poor. Consumer electronics have always been important for Tesco, but Mr. Clarke said to significantly reduce the presence in this market.
It now seems that Mr. Clarke will not be able to stabilize Tesco as recovery is taking longer than expected. Also, Tesco's operations in Asia and Eastern Europe have lost the sheen in recent years.
Phillip Clarke will feel more pressure after first-quarter figures revealed today. He said that reducing the presence of consumer electronics products was part of the plan.
