The emergence of `Minecraft' as one of the hottest games on the Internet has brought to the forefront its not-so-widely-known development studio Mojang AB, which is headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden.
Over the last few years, Minecraft has become such an obsession for gamers all across the world that more than 20 million copies of the game have been sold by Mojang; which has total staff strength of only 29 employees.
The `phenomena' Minecraft game reached the `1 million units sold' milestone in 2011; and it still continues to gain momentum. The attraction of the title among the gamers is evident from the fact that while most of the other million-selling titles record the majority of their sales in the initial few weeks of the title's release, the bulk of Minecraft's total sales of over 20 million units came in 2012.
With the noteworthy sales building-block game on PCs, mobile handset, and Xbox 360 gaming console having fetched Mojang approximately $240 million, a recent article in the Swedish financial press has revealed that, during the year 2012, Minecraft's creator Markus "Notch" Persson made a whopping $101 million in licensing fees.
In response to a question about how he intends spending the money accruing from Minecraft sales, Persson - who "grew up in a relatively poor family" - said: "I think the right way to use money like this is to set a decent portion aside to make sure my family is comfortable, spend some on living out your dreams, and then try to put the rest toward making society a better place."
