Elcomsoft: Apple saves up to four months of customers’ call history on its iCloud servers
In a Thursday disclosure, Russian computer forensics firm Elcomsoft said in a blog post that US tech giant Apple continuously stores the call history of customers on its iCloud servers for a period of up to four months.
According to Elcomsoft, the customers' call history saved by Apple on its iCloud servers includes private information like phone numbers, dates of the calls, and the duration of calls.
In cautioning that customers' call history is saved by Apple whenever they use iCloud Drive, Elcomsoft said that the private information is automatically transmitted by iPhone and iPad users to Apple when iCloud is enabled.
Highlighting the fact that Apple can provide law enforcement with the encryption keys for unlocking the customers' private data stored by it, Elcomsoft CEO Vlatamir Katalov said in the company blog post: "There is no way to hide your calls from government requests other than disabling iCloud Drive."
Meanwhile, The Intercept has revealed in a report that Apple not only logs the customers' regular call history, but also evidently keeps records of metadata linked to FaceTime calls at least since March 2015, when the company introduced the iOS 8.2 version of its mobile operating system.
