Amazon unveils new AWS Glue service to remove drudge work from data analysis

At its AWS re:Invent cloud conference in Las Vegas, Amazon unveiled a new service called 'AWS Glue' to help AWS (Amazon Web Services) customers with their data analysis workload.

The introduction of the AWS Glue service by Amazon underscores an apparent effort by the company to ensure that AWS enhances the ease and efficiency for enterprises to analyze their data in the cloud; thereby removing the drudge work from data analysis.

Specifically, the AWS Glue service will be a fully managed data catalog and ETL (extract, transform, load) system. The service has been designed to facilitate the handling of data discovery, mapping, and job scheduling tasks, by making it easy to move data between various databases, systems, and apps.

In reference to the introduction of the new AWS Glue service, Amazon's Chief Technology Officer Werner Vogels said at the conference that "Eighty percent of what we call analytics is not analytics at all but just hard work."

According to Amazon, the AWS Glue service -- which the Amazon website claims is "coming soon" -- is being integrated with Amazon S3, Amazon RDS, and Amazon Redshift. The service will have the capability to connect to any data store that complies with Java Database Connectivity.
