Authors United to Approach Amazon’s Board Members directly over Hachette Issue
Authors United, a group of Hachette writers and their allies, is planning to appeal straight away to Amazon's board to resolve the issue with Hachette Book Group in the US.
The group will warn the Amazon's board that the reputation of the company and their board directors are at risk. Authors United are planning to send a warning letter to 10 board members of Amazon. Hachette is the fourth largest U.S. book publisher owned by France's Legardere.
It has been reported that Amazon is stopping its customers from buying the books published under the publication of Hachette. Writers associated with the publisher have found themselves neglected by the market in past six months.
Many writers with Hachette are scared and angry with the scenario, as they found that Amazon has been delaying deliveries of their books ordered by readers. Also, they have found that the online retailer was cutting discounts on some books published by Hachette.
Amazon in defense said in some cases, selling a book online at a price of $14.99 to $19.99 is quite expensive. It also said that books with low price tags have higher sales and therefore generate more revenue and royalties for authors.
This will be the second letter from the group. The first letter was published in New York Times, through which the group asked its customers to contact Amazon's CEO and founder Jeff Bezos and asked him to resolve the dispute with HBG. The 1,100 members of Authors United have time until Wednesday to sign a letter.
People who wrote to Mr. Bezos said that they did not receive any revert from him. On the other hand, Amazon has refused to disclose the number of total emails it received.
Some of the major members from Amazon's board include former chairman and CEO of Reader's Digest, Thomas O Ryder; Patricia Q Stonesifer, a former CEO of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; and William B Gordon, co-founder of the games company Electronic Arts.
