A look back at Falcon 9’s monumental landing
Elon Musk-led SpaceX made history a year ago by successfully launching a Falcon 9 rocket carrying a satellite into Earth’s orbit, and then safely landing it upright on a landing pad in Cape Canaveral.
The powerful Falcon 9 is the first reusable rocket that actually reached outer space and sent a satellite into Earth’s orbit before safely landing upright on Earth.
The National Geographic channel recently released a short video clip from its documentary of the historic event. It showed how tense the situation was for Mr. Musk and SpaceX scientists during that the first attempt.
In the video Mr. Musk could be heard asking if the sensors would be able to detect anything posing an issue for the operation.
In the video, Mr. Musk runs outside the control center as soon as the rocket launches to watch it in the night sky. Mr. Musk nervously watch and wait, while the scientists and other staff members get increasingly sinking in the silent tension.
Less than two weeks after the successful launch and landing of the Falcon 9, Mr. Musk announced that the rocket was ready to serve go again. The reusable rocket will be used to deliver payloads and eventually NASA astronauts to and from the International Space Station (ISS).
