Violence in Spain after Controversial Referendum
Spain witnessed violence in Catalonia as controversial referendum was held. Local media reports suggest that nearly 40 percent of Catalans voted for independence. Spanish government opposed referendum and people were removed from voting stations by riot police. Catalonia is one of the richest regions in Spain.
Local authorities have confirmed that 337 people were injured in the crackdown. The reports also suggest that 11 police officers were injured during violence. The Spanish government has opposed the demand of Catalans for independence. The event on Sunday has widened the rift between Barcelona and Madrid.
People formed long queues outside polling stations in cities and villages across the Catalan region. Majority of residents support holding a referendum. However, the government has opposed the demand over the past few years.
Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont criticized Spanish government. He added, “The unjustified, disproportionate and irresponsible violence of the Spanish state today has not only failed to stop Catalans’ desire to vote... but has helped to clarify all the doubts we had to resolve today.”
