Caffeine-induced cardiac event kills South Carolina teen
Too much of caffeine from energy drinks and cafe in a short time can be a lethal combination. The cause of death of the Spring Hill High School teenager who had collapsed in a classroom last month and died, was a “caffeine-induced” cardiac event, the Richland County Coroner’s Office said in its newly-published report.
Richland County Coroner Gary Watts stated in the report that 16-year-old Davis Allen Cripe’s cardiac event that caused a probable arrhythmia was triggered by consumption of too much caffeine in a short period.
Watts explained that the teenager ingested the caffeine from a big Diet Mountain Dew, a cafe latte from fast food giant McDonald’s as well as an energy drink within around a couple of hours.
The victim’s father, Sean Cripe, told reporters that his son was healthy and had no family history of caffeine-related medical issues.
Holding back tears, Mr. Cripe said, “It wasn’t a car crash that took his life. Instead, it was an energy drink. Parents, please talk to your kids about these energy drinks. And teenagers and students: please stop buying them.”
Officials declined to name the energy drink that Davis had purchased from a McDonald’s restaurant at around 12:30 p.m. on 26th of April. However, they said he had ingested a Diet Mountain Dew a little time consuming that energy drink.
