Year-long study foresees extensive applications of AI in North American cities by year 2030
Stanford University’s year-long study has predicted wide applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in North American cities by year 2030. However, it mentioned that the success measure for the rapidly emerging technologies was the value they create for human lives.
A 17-member panel of academic and industrial experts, including a few from beyond the United States, has released a report entitled, ‘Artificial Intelligence and Life in 2030’ under the One Hundred Year Study on Artificial Intelligence (AI100). The ongoing project AI100 is meant to inform societal deliberation and give guidance on the ethical development of sensors, machines, and smart software.
The panel’s chair Peter Stone, a computer scientist at the University of Texas at Austin, said, “We believe specialized AI applications will become both increasingly common and useful by 2030, improving our economy and life quality. But it will also create profound challenges, affecting jobs, incomes and other issues we should begin addressing now to ensure AI benefits are broadly shared”.
The report mentioned eight areas of human activity wherein AI technologies have started affecting urban life in ways that are going to become increasingly pervasive and profound by 2030. The identified eight areas include transportation, home/service robots, health care, education, entertainment, low-resource communities, public safety and security, and employment and workplace.
While attempting to assess the technological, economic and policy implications of probable AI applications in a societal relevant setting, the panel admitted the requirement of public discourse. The researchers added that it’s right time to have a social debate over how the division of fruits of an AI-dominated economy should be done.
Stone said that until now, everybody has come to about AI from science fiction books and films. Stone mentioned that the study has given a realistic foundation to talk about the probable impact of AI technologies on society.
