HTC announces pricing/availability details of consumer edition of Vive VR headset

At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2016 in Barcelona, Spain, on Sunday, HTC shared details about the pricing and availability of its much-reported consumer edition of the company’s Vive virtual reality (VR) headset, which it has developed in collaboration with Valve.

According to the information divulged by HTC at the MWC event, preorders for the forthcoming consumer version of Vive VR headset will be opened by the company at 10 a.m. ET on February 29, 2016; and the shipping of the handset will likely begin on March 28, 2016. The cost of the HTC Vive VR headset will be $799.

HTC has also revealed that, to help consumers get accustomed to the VR world, the consumer edition of the Vive VR headset will, for a limited period, ship with two fully fledged VR experiences --- ‘Job Simulator: The 2050 Archives’ by Owlchemy Labs; and ‘Fantastic Contraption’ by Northway Games.

The HTC Vive VR headset is being referred to as a "complete Vive system" because the device will essentially be a package that includes the Vive head-mounted display, two wireless VR controllers, two sensors for Lighthouse room-scale motion detection, and the two mentioned VR titles.

Highlighting the fact that the Vive VR headset will be “delivered as a complete kit,” HTC wrote said that the kit will allow users “to instantly jump into a fully immersive virtual environment using two wireless controllers, 360 degree tracking and room scale movement sensors.”
